According to BP’s refinery spokesperson, two pipefitters have suffered extreme steam burns on large parts of their bodies. One of the employees was transported via helicopter to University of Texas Medical Branch Hospital in Galveston and the other was taken to the Mainland Medical Center in Texas City. As of 7:00am this morning, their conditions have not been released.

This BP refinery was the site of the industrial explosion in 2005 that killed 15 workers and injured over 170. In the past few months, BP has been struggling with the oil spill disaster in the Gulf of Mexico and is currently under investigation for an apparent 41 day benzene release in the Texas City area.

The investigation surrounds the straps that attach the fuel tanks. These straps may rust and break. Approximately 1.4 million trucks from 1997 to 2001 model years are involved in the investigation and may be affected. 28 complaints have been filed for detached or dragging straps. No crashes, injuries or fires have been reported to date.

Nearby homes were evacuated because the 18 wheeler was carrying isobutene, which is both flammable and corrosive. The semi-trailer collided with a pickup truck causing this chemical spill.

Homes in a subdivision nearby were evacuated because the chemical was in the air and was not settling due to the oppressive heat the Houston area is suffering from. Several dozen of these subdivision residents in the little town of Hamshire, Texas,  sheltered together in a Red Cross Shelter all morning.

A black truck was seen weaving in and out of traffic on the Gulf Freeway while traveling at a high rate of speed right before it struck a gold colored truck with 2 passengers. One of the passengers was thrown from the truck and was transported and died soon after transport. The driver of the gold truck died at the scene.

Investigators mentioned that the driver of the black truck might have been under the influence of drugs due the fact that bottles of pills were found in the truck. The driver was taken into custody and is facing multiple chargers. This auto accident inconvenienced many Houston drivers  because the freeway was shut down for over 3 hours.

Corporations and companies have 5 days to notify the NHTSA upon learning of a defective product of any type.

Toyota had notified the NHTSA of issues with Hilux trucks back in 2004, however shared that the safety defect was isolated to vehicles in Japan and that field information was NOT showing an reports in the U.S. Last Friday, NHTSA was made aware of multiple complaints prior to the 2004 Hilux recall in Japan. Because of this notice, the NHTSA has opened a new investigations. NHTSA Administrator David Strickland said, “NHTSA has taken swift action since first receiving copies of these complaints on Friday. Our team is now working to obtain documents and information from Toyota to find out whether the manufacturer notified NHTSA within five business days of discovering a safety defect in U.S. Vehicles.”

Mahon was killed on impact.  The automobile wreck caused injuries to Scranton who is a North Carolina resident.

Nicole King, 14, of Katy, Texas was sitting in the rear passenger seat in the Toyota at the time of the automobile wreck.  She was pronounced dead at the scene.  The other passengers of the Toyota were Life Flighted for medical treatment.

Paul Smith, 36, of Haltom City, Texas was pronounced dead at the scene.  The 18 wheeler wreck involved a total of five cars, two 18 wheelers and two pickups.  The roads were closed for several hours for the investigation.
